Tumbletopia is ideal for school visits and compliments the National Curriculum. We wish our visitors to leave Tumbletopia not only with a bag of gemstones but also an understanding of some of the wonders contained within our earth. No visit to Tumbletopia is complete without a trip to the Discovery Zone to find out more about rocks, fossils and the world around us.
Tumbletopia is great fun for all ages. Better than that, children can enjoy the experience whilst learning. Aimed at primary pupils, the lessons can be very simple or more complex depending on the age and level of ability of the pupils. There are 2 main units in which Tumbletopia can supplement the National Curriculum for 2008. These are Units 1C and 3D although there is also a close link with 2D and 3C
Following the fun in the Tumbletopia Cave and panning, the children can gather in the Discovery Zone to discuss the properties of the gems which they have found and other items within the zone. By the end of the session the children will not only have had a great time but will be able to name and describe various materials, use a wide vocabulary to describe them, be able to make comparisons and suggest uses for different materials
Following the fun in the Tumbletopia Cave and panning, the children can gather in the Discovery Zone to discuss the properties of the gems which they have found and other items within the zone. They can find out the uses of some of the minerals as well as other available rock specimens. Working with the stones, they can identify similar characteristics and carry out simple tests to aid in their grouping. Identifying the sources of minerals from around the world they will recognise that beneath the surface of the earth there is rock and that different soils can be formed from these rocks.
School parties are welcome throughout the year and benefit from a discounted rate. They will also be given access to a trained and CRB checked member of staff to aid them in their learning. Learning materials are available in order to prepare for a visit and to carry on the teaching in the field or back in the classroom.
